Honesty

Honesty is the best policy, right? Then why is it so hard to be honest with ourselves sometimes? We pretend everything is fine to protect our ego or social status, even when it creates an emotional toll.

In truth (...is that a pun?), when we can’t be honest with ourselves, it creates a rift from others and prevents us from having deep, rich relationships. We might not even realize when we are being dishonest with ourselves until we feel negative emotions like anxiety, anger, or sadness. These feelings could pop up in small arguments or as irritations, but they are merely symptoms of a deeper need for change.

One thing is for sure, it takes courage to be honest with ourselves because it usually means having hard conversations with others, implementing boundaries, and embracing the unknown. However, the reward of being aligned with our authentic selves grants us freedom and confidence in the long run. When we are living a more aligned life, we have a greater sense of ease and peace.

Now, being honest with ourselves doesn’t mean having all the answers, but acknowledging those feelings listed above when they keep coming back is a huge first step. I invite you to explore ways we aren’t honest with ourselves and see if any sound familiar.

  • You hear an inappropriate joke and laugh anyway or don’t say anything rather than saying that you felt it was inappropriate.
  • You find yourself saying, “yes” to things you don’t really want to do.
  • You hide parts of yourself that you believe are “bad or different” to accommodate your friend's views or social situations.
  • You overcommit your time because you don’t want to let people down even though there is no way you could fit more into your schedule.
  • You have unhealthy habits

The more time we take in inner reflection, or simply to be aware as we move through our days, the more honest we learn to be with ourselves. It’s perfectly normal to feel emotional as you work on this part of your life. This type of work is connected to some deep inner feelings that often get suppressed. As a first step, you might even want to let those close to you know that you are exploring this soul work and ask for their emotional support. Of course, I also recommend opening a dialog with your angels and spirit team.

Here are some journal prompts that might help you along the way. Take your time with these.

  • In what ways are you finding that you could be more honest with yourself?
  • If you were to imagine yourself completely free to be your authentic self, with no judgments from anyone, how would that feel? What would you do?
  • What are you afraid will happen if you are honest about how you feel?
  • If your best friend answered these questions in front of you, how would you respond to them? Offer that compassion and understanding to yourself and write that in your journal as well.

When we embrace being honest with ourselves, we become fearless, self-reliant, healthy, and clear in our lives. Get honest, live from the heart, stop hiding your true self, and gift yourself the time to do the inner work. Remember, you are already amazing and on the other side of this soul work, you will be even more impactful, confident, and true.
